7.8-magnitude earthquake strikes off Japan
i. A powerful undersea earthquake south of Japan has shaken buildings in Tokyo.
ii. The US Geological Survey said the 7.8-magnitude earthquake was centred 874km (543 miles) from the Japanese capital, at a depth of almost 700m.
iii. It struck at 18:30 local time (11:30 GMT). Buildings in the capital swayed for almost a minute as the quake built in intensity.
 

iv. Tokyo Electric Power Company said there were no abnormalities at the crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant following the quake. The runways at Tokyo’s Narita airport were operating normally but the high-speed bullet train service between Tokyo and Osaka was halted due to a power outage.

India tops in World Hunger List with 194 Million People: UN Report
i. India is home to the highest number of hungry people in the world, at 194 million, surpassing China, according to United Nations annual hunger report.
ii. At the global level, the corresponding figure dropped to 795 million in 2014-15, from 1 billion in 1990-92, with East Asia led by China accounting for most of the reductions, UN body Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) said in its report titled ‘The State of Food Insecurity in the World 2015’.

iii. India too saw a reduction between 1990 and 2015, it added. In 1990-92, those who were starved of food in India numbered 210.1 million, which came down to 194.6 million in 2014-15.

iv. The overall analysis suggested that inclusive economic growth, agricultural investments and social protection, along with political stability, can eradicate hunger.

PM Modi, Shiekh Hasina to inaugurate Kamalasagar border ‘haat’
i. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bangladesh premier Sheikh Hasina will jointly inaugurate a border ‘haat’ (market) at Kamalasagar in Tripura’s Sipahijala district, which borders Brahmanbaria district of Bangladesh.
ii. The ‘haat’ would be jointly inaugurated through video conferencing from Dhaka during Modi’s two-day visit to Bangladesh beginning from June 6.
 
iii. The construction of a market shed and other infrastructure facilities at a cost of Rs. 2.5 crores is almost complete.

iv. Sepahijala Additional District Magistrate Dilip Kumar Chakma and his Brahmanbaria counterpart Nazma Begum informed that Indian traders from India and Bangladesh can transact selected commodities respectively at the ‘haat’. They met five times since Kamalasagar border point was selected.

Pradhan Mantri Jan-Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) is National Mission for Financial Inclusion to ensure access to financial services, namely, Banking / Savings & Deposit Accounts, Remittance, Credit, Insurance, Pension in an affordable manner.
Account can be opened in any bank branch or Business Correspondent (Bank Mitr) outlet. PMJDY accounts are being opened with Zero balance. However, if the account-holder wishes to get cheque book, he/she will have to fulfill minimum balance criteria.

ANZ Bank to open 2 India branches by early 2016
i. ANZ Bank will open two more branches in India by early next year.
ii. The two branches would be opened at Gurgaon and Bangalore, ANZ Executive Director (International banking) Subhash DeGamia said. The bank opened its first branch in India at Mumbai four years ago.
iii. In June 2014, Australia New Zealand Banking Group (ANZ) said it received in-principle approval from the Reserve Bank of India to open new branches in Gurgaon and in outer Bengalore.
 
iv. Its Mumbai branch offers Indian Rupee and foreign currency services, working capital and term financing, transaction banking, global markets, deposits and advisory services.

v. In addition, ANZ’s Bangalore-based operations and technology shared services hub employs more than 6,000 staff supporting ANZ’s businesses around the world.

PM Modi launches ‘Kisan TV’ for farmers
i. Marking the first anniversary of NDA government, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched ‘Kisan TV’ at a function held in Vigyan Bhawan.
ii. In his address, PM stressed on the need for improving farmers’ condition in the country. He said if country wants to progress, the elevation of villages and farmers is the stepping stone.
 
iii. After coming to power, the NDA government had announced that it will launch a 24—hour TV channel for farmers.

iv. In his Union Budget 2014 speech, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, who now also holds the charge of the I&B ministry, had announced that a 24—hour TV channel will be dedicated to the agriculture sector, for which he had marked an outlay of Rs. 100 crore.

1. China sets up “largest” gold fund for nations along Silk Road 
i. China, the world’s biggest gold producer, has set up a gold sector fund involving countries along the ancient Silk Road which is expected to raise $16.1 billion.
ii. The fund, led by Shanghai Gold Exchange (SGE), is expected to raise an estimated 100 billion yuan ($16.1 billion) in three phases.

iii. About 60 countries have invested in the fund, which will in turn facilitate gold purchase for the central banks of member states to increase their holdings of the precious metal.
iv. The fund will invest in gold mining in countries along the Silk Road, which will increase exploration in countries such as Afghanistan and Kazakhstan.

India-Singapore bilateral naval exercise SIMBEX-15 commences in Singapore
i. Bilateral naval exercise SIMBEX-15 between India and Singapore commenced on 23 May 2015 in Singapore and concluding on May 26, 2015.
ii. This edition of naval exercise will give traditional emphasis on anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and more complex maritime exercises. It will involve various facets of naval operations such as air and surface practice firing, air defence, maritime security and search & rescue operations.
iii. For this edition of exercise, Indian navy is represented by
  • INS Satpura- an indigenously built guided missile stealth frigate with integral helicopter.
  • INS Kamorta– an indigenous anti-submarine warfare (ASW) corvette.
  • P 8I Aircraft– It is a long Range Maritime Reconnaissance Anti- Submarine (LRMRASW) aircraft.

Jayalalithaa sworn in as Tamil Nadu CM for fifth time
i. AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa sworn in for the fifth time as Tamil Nadu chief minister, nearly eight months after she was forced to quit over corruption charges.
ii. Governor K Rosaiah gave oath to Jayalalitha at the Madras University Centenary Auditorium. Actor Rajinikanth, ICC Chairman N. Srinivasan and Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan attended the ceremony.

iii. Along with Jaya, 28 others were sworn in as Ministers. Jayalalithaa will hold the portfolios of home, police, public, all India services, general administration and district revenue officers?.

iv. As for portfolio allocations, Jayalalithaa’s trusted lieutenant O Panneerselvam has been given Finance and Public works, which he held previously too. Natham R Viswanathan will continue to hold electricity, prohibition and excise portfolio.
